MARCH ON
The kind of “good trouble” John Lewis preached was what he learned as a boy, developed as a man, and as a saint, delivered one last sermon. One last call to action, activism, and (peaceful) arms. One final word to younger generations, as a saint, on his way to heaven. Lewis had asked his friend, Morgan Freeman [LAST OF THE MISSISSIPPI JUKES] read his final words, a call to (peaceful) arms

“TWO SIDES”
b/ Living Colour
Slow to make it into the “live” set, “Two Sides,” immediately showed itself to be one of the most haunting and thoughtful tunes among the long list of powerful songs, written for Shade. “Two Sides” is Corey Glover’s word to the wise … warning those paying attention, not to fall stupid to those misinformation spread by those willing to LIE, CHEAT, AND MISINFORM to get what they want.

“Who Shot Ya?” — The cover of Biggie Smalls had been solidly in the “Live” Living Colour set for at least two years, and had been chosen, specifically, to be a part of the band’s new record, Shade.

Shade — Lving Colour’s third POST-APOCALYPTIC album had been written and recorded more than two years before the VIOLENT SUMMER OF 2016. Yes, Shade had been written and recorded two years ago, but was NOT MIXED to a unanimous satisfaction of the band. Nothing new, the band of Living Colour argued over everything from, the mix of the drums, the choice and arrangement of tunes, and a frame by frame analysis of the results of an in-studio, wardrobe forward photo shoot. Al Capone, pin-stripe suits and fedora hats … Corey, as he always has, as the front man, and Vernon, the mad scientist, funk metal guitarist could pull it off, but Will Calhoun, who has always stood for the best of “Glamour Boy” fashion, onstage, usually wearing the most colorful, African silk, and Doug Wimbish, well representing the working class, t-shirt-sneakers-and-jeans, journeyman qualities of the band, look far out of fashion place.

A Tale of Two Bands. Getting Back Together
LIVING COLOUR — As it ever was, Vernon Reid’s rock band, with Corey Glover doing most of the talking.
HEAD>>FAKE — After Living Colour’s [1992] dissolution, Will Calhoun and Doug Wimbish continued to work together, building a wall-of-sound, dub, drum and bass sound system, playing, as Doug often announced, “NEW MUSIC FOR THE NEW GENERATION, JUST TWO GUYS, THE HEAD>>FAKE SOUND SYSTEM … COMIN’ ATCHA BABY, as if it had been 1992 again, when Doug was ending his relationship with another of his bands, TACK>>HEAD, also called a “sound system.” On this [2001] Post-Apocalyptic American Tour, it more seemed two bands onstage, after a 7-year hiatus, were learning again how to play well together.
THE POST-APOCALYPTIC SET
Starting out with the familiar electric guitar virtuosity, paired with the spectacularly soulful voice, you were no doubt in the presence of Living Colour, better than ever, now, held together by one of rock n roll’s deepest, heaviest, and most musically adept rhythm sections.
