January 17, 2014 (Michelle Obama’s 50th Birthday)
The first time Allan Harris, Doug Wimbish, and the other 21st Century Freedom Riders played together, it was at the WLRN (PBS) studio, downtown Miami, and coincidentally it was Michelle Obama’s 50th birthday. The band was in town to play the Miami Design Preservation League’s annual ART DECO WEEKEND on Ocean Drive in Miami Beach. Being that the festival was on Martin Luther King Jr. weekend, Harris and Wimbish decided to play songs whose content was somehow related to the African American fight for equal religious, financial, and racial justice for all.

The hour-long set aired on WLRN’s Arts Beat, Ed Bell’s Friday at Noon, live broadcast.
