Kick Ass Rock N Roll
“Honky Tonk Woman”
Miami, Florida / Orange Bowl
November 16, 1989 — It was the day before my birthday when I saw the Rolling Stones in the Miami Orange Bowl, one show in their 1989 North American Tour. I was fortunate enough to be sitting in the second row. From there, as the band broke into “Honky Tonk Woman,” I was surprised looking up to see two roadies, high up in the scaffolding on both sides of the large stage. Soon, two enormous inflatable dolls rose 40 feet into the South Florida night sky, and began to writhe slowly to the honky tonk groove. From a distance, I’m sure it appeared that the “women” were being moved by the tropical breeze, but in actuality, it was the two roadies, with their backs to the crowd, hidden behind the dolls, kicking each in their inflatable ass.

Starting at the Top
• So meteoric was Living Colour’s launch, that the band was confident releasing “Time Tunnel,” a biographical documentary, just two years after emerging out of NYC’s “downtown” punk scene.
From its infancy at CBGB, to playing stadiums with the world’s most enduring and legendary rock n roll band, Living Colour, from the beginning was PLAYING LOUD AND (ALWAYS) SAYING SOMETHING.
• The video here is a 15-minute segment of “Time Tunnel,” in which the band discusses its relationship with the Rolling Stones, opening the Steel Wheels North American Tour, and its rock n roll initiation on the road, performing before crowds larger than most bands (even the successful) ever experience.
Also included in the clip is an energized playing of “Cult Of Personality” (Living Colour’s first Grammy Award) in Oakland, California, and ends onstage with the Stones in Montreal (Quebec, Canada), with “It’s Only Rock N Roll,” the Steel Wheels tour’s final encore performance.

The Continuum
Opening with “Freedom Of Expression (F.O.X.),” a warning of “falsified news,” followed “Program,” an equally pointed critique of reality TV, and including covers of Biggie Smalls’ “Who Shot Ya” and Marvin Gaye’s “Inner City Blues,” SHADE makes it clear, that after 30 years, Living Colour is STILL ALIVE AND WELL.
