Steve Morse with his G3 brother John Petrucci, in one of those “good” rehearsal/sound check moments, a relaxed and entertaining run through the Focus classic, “Hocus Pocus.” jam. Anyone of a certain musical age will remember the tune, including the yodel.

In 1989, the first Grammy award for Best Hard Rock/Metal Performance sparked controvery when Jethro Tull won over Metallica, despite Metallica being the clear favorite and a much more prominent metal band. This upset is widely considered one of the biggest Grammy blunders. The decision led to the Grammy’s separating the categories the following year, with Metallica winning Best Metal Performance in 1990.
Whose Metal is Hardest?
1989 — Jethro Tull vs. Metallica
Let the Battles Begin (Rage On)
In 1989, the Grammy Awards introduced a new Hard Rock and Metal category, acknowledging the growing popularity of more aggressive, Metal and Thrash music. Metallica, with its critically acclaimed album, “…And Justice for All,” was heavily favored to win. It was more than a surprise when Jethro Tull, known for its progressive rock sound, and unapologetic flute, won the category with “Crest of a Knave.”
Reaction was fast and furious. Widespread outrage and disbelief from fans, critics, and even long-time Jethro Tull fans, who will always have Aqualung on their all-time classic list.
The backlash prompted the Grammys to split the category in 1990, creating separate awards for Hard Rock and Metal. Metallica subsequently won the first Best Metal Performance award for their song “One.”
