During the week Apollo 11 was on its voyage to the Moon, Charles Kuralt sent teams of writers, photographers, and on-air personalities all around the country to produce Day-In-The-Life segments, to be compiled, edited as a document of the time. Rather than air the finished piece immediately, Kuralt thought it better to shelve it as a “time capsule,” to be opened 25 years later, July 20, 1994.

It’s a job that most newsmen only dream of — traveling around the United States looking for outlandish or interesting people and events. Things like musical saw players, swimming pigs, and “worm-grunting” — not to mention tree-sitting marathons and egg-holding contests.
But for Charles Kuralt and the crew of CBS’s “On the Road”, searching for out-of-the-ordinary glimpses of America is a way of life.
Kuralt has said that “… when CBS goes out to shoot a documentary, they take along a cameraman, a sound man, an electrician, an assistant cameraman, a researcher, and a producer … When the “On the Road” crew strikes out, it’s just Charlie, Charlie, Izzy, and Larry. [CONT’D]

THE RETURN
After nearly fifty years away, moving back to my hometown, Rockledge, Florida, brought back many memories, and also made clear what a difference a half century makes.
Since watching Alan Shepard fly with my mother, sister, and brother from our sandy front yard in Cocoa, I saw every rocket launched from Cape Canaveral, including the Challenger when it exploded in 1986. Walking into the Miami Herald’s bureau in West Palm Beach, and seeing the forked-tongue after cloud, I knew something had gone tragically wrong. To most, such a failure seemed unthinkable, but reality was that the space shuttle had only flown 25 times before, and for those who grew up near Cape Canaveral, we knew that no launch was a sure thing, and all with astronauts were anxious, death-defying moments.
