They Only Come Out At Night
Prohibition did little to curb Florida’s consumption of liquor, in fact, it inspired a dramatic increase in Cuba’s production of rum, run frequently between the Bahamas, Havana, and South Florida. Miami, became a more dangerous, underground city, with a network of mob-run Speakeasies to keep the pioneer population’s thirst quenched, and a growing crime syndicate swimming in ill-gotten cash.
“THE MIAMI BEACH CENTURY”
[1900]— Looking across the bay that separated the small barrier island that would become Miami Beach, was the mouth of the Miami River, the spot on the mainland, where Julia Tuttle would build her home, the first in Miami … nothing like the Art Deco, neon-lit, techno-music shit storm that Ocean Drive is today.
Carl Fisher — (Indianapolis) Automobile Racer and Hotelier … The man behind Miami’s transformation, from a tropical island used for agriculture, to an international, oceanside resort, known for its Art Deco style, trend-setting fashion, big-budget entertainment, notorious crime, and leading pop culture’s influence on future social change.
