A LOVELY DAY
9/11 (2001)
— dave.
2OO3 — Despite 9/11 interrupting their 2001 reunion, the band felt invigorated, and agreed to begin work on a new record. Less than two years later (lightning fast, by Living Colour, dysfunctional-family standards), the band released CollideOscope, its first studio album of its 20-year career. Some thought CollideOscope was somewhat schizophrenic, with many tunes, after opening with an AC DC’s “Back In Black,” taking an untraditional turn, following a sonic path cut by Will Calhoun and Doug Wimbish. On their own, Doug and Will called themselves the Head>>Fake Soundsystem, “just two guys” Doug would often say in live performances. “New music, for a new generation.”
It was a Head>>Fake show (with David Sancious sitting in) at CBGB, Christmas week 2000, when Corey and Vernon stepped up out of the audience, and played a Living Colour set, the first the band had played in the seven years since Vernon dissolved Living Colour, not long after the release of its third record, Stain.

— Who? New Yorker
In addition to Vernon’s “Flying,” two other 9/11 interpretations that were immediately timeless were Ani DiFranco’s “Self-Evident,” first recorded (as a song) by Chuck D, who asked Ani’s permission after hearing a recording of her, reciting it as a poem, and New Yorker magazine’s (wordless) “mourning” cover.

Living Colour’s first single (“Funny Vibe”) was included on, but released before, the band’s 1988 debut album, Vivid. In the years since, with New York City’s “stop and frisk,” a growing trend of police using deadly force, “Black Lives Matter,” George Floyd, and the ugly “Cult of Personality” around the virus called Trump, the band still often includes “Funny Vibe” in it’s post-9/11 sets.
“Release The Pressure” was an unreleased tune on Pride, the last Living Colour (“best of”) album/disc released after the band’s breakup. This performance was at the Orlando House of Blues, (December 28, 2001) just before the Reunion Tour’s last show, New Year’s Eve, back home in New York City.

2003 — I CAN SEE CLEARLY NOW
• CollideOscope (album)
After the reunion, 9/11 interruption, Living Colour’s fourth studio album, the first since Vernon dissolved the band less than a year after releasing Stain (1992). Schizophrenic? With David Sancious. Much like the reunion shows, before they had reconnected completely, it sometimes sounded as if two different bands were recording together. A mix of HEAD>>FAKE, and LIVING COLOUR.
Amongst a number of mixed CollideOscope reviews, Vernon’s “Flying,” the haunting depiction of his watching fellow New Yorkers leaping out of the burning Twin Towers, to their common deaths on the street below, was universally praised.
The 9-11 terrorist attack on the Twin Towers in New York City put an abrupt halt to Living Colour’s reunion tour and while watching the horrific event on television, Reid wrote “Flying,” what most critics sited as the highlight of the band’s fourth studio album, CollideOscope.
