JIMMY HASLIP DISCUSSES HIS LIFE AS A MUSICIAN
It could be said that Jimmy Haslip’s musical career started when he was five years old and watched a Salsa band setting up for a backyard, family wedding. Jimmy was in the Bronx, New York, and with both his mother and father being born in Puerto Rican, the Haslip home was steeped in Latin culture and sound. [RAY BARETTO]
Always staying musically true to his ancestral roots, Jimmy’s mind was open to all he heard around him. And living in New York City, he was introduced to everything, and in a career that’s going on fifty years, he’s played it “all,” and used every influence in writing and creating his own sound.
Listen to Jimmy describe his first concert being Billy Joel (The Hassles) on Long Island; playing popular Rhythm & Blues and Rock, in his first band, at high-school parties; and seeing Jimi Hendrix five times, including the legendary performances at Woodstock and the Fillmore East.
This before moving to Los Angeles in 1973, where he met Tommy Bolin just after Deep Purple and Robben Ford with whom he partnered to found the Yellojackets. Jimmy still lives in Los Angeles, the city where he evolved into the Jimmy Haslip so many Jazz lovers know today.
An interview with Jimmy (2007), while on a tour supporting Blues For Tony, a record paying tribute to Tony Williams, the drummer often credited as the first to play the Electric Jazz/Jazz Rock music that became known as “Fusion.” Allan Holdsworth, Alan Pasqua, Chad Wackerman, and Jimmy made LIVE AT YOSHI’S.
Here, in a conversation with a Jazz writer in Paris, France, Jimmy, as usual, tells his story in a relaxed, informational, and entertaining way.
