1950 — “Young Man with a Horn“
Young Man with a Horn is a 1950 American musical drama film starring
Kirk Douglas,
Lauren Bacall,
Doris Day,
Hoagy Carmichael, and
Juano Hernandez.
Directed by Michael Curtiz, “Young Man with a Horn” is based on the 1938 novel of the same name by Dorothy Baker, inspired by the life of jazz cornetist Bix Beiderbecke. (Hugh Hefner’s favorite)

Gideon blew a trumpet as a signal for his army to attack,  a key part of a strategic plan designed to confuse and frighten the Midianite army. The trumpets, combined with torches and a battle cry, created a sense of being surrounded and under attack, ultimately contributing to the Midianites’ defeat.

Gideon’s plan was less about direct combat and more about psychological warfare. The sound of the trumpets, coupled with the breaking of clay jars and the sudden appearance of torches, created confusion and panic among the Midianite soldiers.
Gideon strategically divided his 300 men into three companies and positioned them around the Midianite camp. The trumpets, coming from multiple directions, made it seem like a much larger force was attacking.
The trumpets, along with the torches, also carried symbolic weight, representing the word of God and His power to bring down strongholds. The trumpets were a signal, not just of attack, but also of divine intervention.
Gideon’s Trumpet
1964 — A book by Anthony Lewis describing the story behind the 1963 landmark court case Gideon v. Wainwright, in which the Supreme Court of the United States ruled that criminal defendants have the right to an attorney even if they cannot afford one. In 1965, the book won an Edgar Award from the Mystery Writers of America for Best Fact Crime book.

I first heard Miles Davis as a student, and I was struck by his extraordinary musicianship. His work did affect some of the sounds of Simply Red. He is the reason I chose to have a muted trumpet on ‘Holding Back the Years.’

A superb tenor voice, like a silver trumpet muffled in silk.”
