May 5, 1961— Two weeks after the Soviet Cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin‘s flight, America was anxious about having fallen behind the Communists in the RACE TO SPACE. Alan Shepard could have been first, but his launch was held because of bad weather on Florida’s East Coast, including Cape Canaveral.

“EARTHRISE” — Maybe the most impactful photograph’s ever shot. Credited by Al Gore to have been the image that fueled the Environmental Movement (EARTH DAY) started April 22, 1970. The World Seen ‘Round The World, seen as it had never been seen before. As the crew of Apollo 8 had seen the Dark Side of The Moon, the first ever, they prepared to be the first to see Moon’s first Sunrise. Then the sudden shock of what none had imagined. A Vivid, Blue Earth was rising slowly on the horizon of a colorless Moon, and shining brilliantly in the absolute Black of Space. All three grabbed camera’s, but only Anders’ had been loaded with color (Kodak Ektachrome) film, and he shot the the most famous (“EARTHRISE“) image.
1971 — Alan Shepard piloted Apollo 14 to the Moon, making him the only one of the Orginal 7 NASA astronauts who also went to the Moon. In addition to piloting the mission, conducting a number of scientific taks on the surface of the moon, he also hit a few 9-irons, and delivered the first newspaper to the Moon … A special edition Cocoa TODAY, Florida’s Space Age Newspaper.
