The Day The Earth Stood Still
MARCH 31, 2003 — Coincidentally, the day I met Ani DiFranco was the same day TIME magazine released it’s “special” Shock and Awe issue to “celebrate?” George W. Bush’s invasion of Iraq on behalf of The United States of America. I dropped the magazine and a pen in front of her, and asked her to write whatever came to mind. After a short, three-second, pause, she quickly scrawled “IT’S A MAD MAD MAD WORLD,” across the entire cover, signing it at the end. Talking to her, she was a woman, wise beyond her years. “SELF-EVIDENT,” might be the most thoughtful piece written about 9-11, the day the Earth stood still.
