That’s One Small Step For Man, and One Giant Leap for Mankind.

— Neil Armstrong (Apollo 11)

1969Miles Davis recorded Bitches Brew, and was introduced to John McLaughlin and his Electric Guitar. With McLaughlin and the electric Keyboards of Chick Corea and Joe Zawinul, Miles’ had aligned all the musical elements, creating an environment to orchestrate a collision between Rock N Roll and Jazz. Lenny calls it “Jazz Rock” or “Electric Jazz,” but many call it “Fusion.”

Back on Earth, the World was raging. After Birmingham, Selma, Watts, and the Beatles, came The Rolling Stones, Vietnam, Woodstock, and Neil Armstrong walking on the Moon. Jimi Hendrix, Kent State, and Led Zeppelin. The music, as always, reflected the World in which it lived, and all signs were that another monumental change was gonna come.

Bitches Brew was recorded the same year as Woodstock, Apollo 11, and a dramatic escalation of the war in Vietnam. It is no wonder that Miles’ young, Electric Jazz players were inspired by the exploration of space, and looked forward to taking their new sound into the future.

Lenny, was 19 years old when Miles Davis called for him to play drums on his new record, Bitches Brew, which today, many call the fuse that lit the movement called “Fusion.”

Bitches Brew wasn’t Fusion, it was Miles (Davis) playing Rock N Roll.”

— Lenny White

Miles was influenced by all he heard …  Of course Jimi Hendrix, James Brown, Joni Mitchell, and Bob Dylan, but most attractive and interesting to Miles was the emergence of a new sound made from electric pianos and synthesized keyboards. For Bitches Brew, he replaced Herbie Hancock with the new generation’s Chick Corea and Joe Zawinul.

Lenny understands absolutely the significance the electric piano had on Miles’ new (Rock N Roll) sound, but Lenny maintains that John McLaughlin’s electric guitar was the instrument of most dramatic change. McLauglin, with Jimi Hendrix, Carlos Santana, Frank Zappa, Larry Coryell, Jeff Beck, Eddie Hazel, Tommy Bolin, and Prince … After the Collision.

Cheaper Than Cheep
June 21, 1974 — An unreleased, Made-For-TV Concert Movie recorded at The Mothers of Invention‘s private rehearsal hall at 5831 Sunset Boulevard in Hollywood, California.

Tommy Bolin — Come Taste the Band (Deep Purple) rehearsals.

In the early ‘70s, before the internet, television was the most important tool for musicians to introduce themselves to a mass audience. This Frank Zappa performance was played with that in mind.

In his personal rehearsal hall, completely staged with his touring lights and sound, Frank and his band, The Mothers of Invention, videotaped a show for his own television production, hoping the recording might be distributed by any or all of the major networks.

Unfortunately, there were technical and business issues that resulted in the footage being shelved for 50 years.

Fortunately, though, with advancements in the tools of post-production tools, and the running of all legal statutes of limitation,  “Cheaper Than Cheep” surfaced in 2011, to the pleasure of all those who’ve always appreciated Zappa’s virtuosity and vicious sense of humor.
The unearthed, two-hour concert (“Cheaper Than Cheap”) is the most intimate recording of Mothers’ line-up in 1974.

2023 — Lenny White recruited Vernon to play on MEB (Miles Electric Band’s) That You Not Dare To Forget record, with a cast of players, who made the sessions seem as if they were all-star games.

One night, after a show at the Highline Ballroom in New York City, Living Colour guitarist Vernon Reid gifted his 1955 Gold-Top Les Paul guitar to Roots guitarist Captain Kirk. The only condition was that the instrument could not be sold. It could only be played by Kirk, until he gifted it to a promising, next generation guitarist of his choosing.

Today, Lenny is on the New Jersey Turnpike, driving into Manhattan, where he’s an adjunct professor in New York University’s prestigious music department. Driving in from his home in Teaneck, NJ, he’s on the same route as Tony Soprano takes in the Sopranos opening (credits) scene.

Lenny teaches “The Miles Davis Aesthetic,” a class of his making, in which he leads an open-minded discussion about the life, time, and musical theory of Miles Davis, The Prophet of Jazz.

Most of Lenny’s students are the same age he was when Miles chose him to play on Bitches Brew, and became a mentor, who set a course for Lenny to see, follow, and live. Miles inspired Lenny to follow his musical calling, and take a lead role in shaping the future of jazz.

Lenny’s been teaching since 2014, but he has lived the Miles Davis philosophy his entire life, especially after Miles Chose him to play drums on the Bitches Brew, the one recording that changed the course of jazz, astronomically.

Today, Lenny, one of Miles’ original disciples, has become the teacher. Leading young, openminded musicians into a world on which Jazz and Rock N Roll have collided, fused, and continued to evolve.

Lenny has played with many (nearly all) the guitarists who most impacted the evolution of “Fusion” music … or as Lenny prefers to say, “Electric Jazz,” or “Jazz Rock.”

Cheaper Than Cheep
1974 — An unreleased, Made-For-TV Concert Movie recorded at The Mothers’ private rehearsal Hall. In the early ‘70s, as Electric Jazz continued to collide with Hard Rock, Funk, and Soul, television was an integral tool to expose a larger (pop) audience to the new sound.

With his complete touring stage and light show setup in The Mothers’ private rehearsal hall, Frank Zappa videotaped the concert for his own TV production, and to also shop it to the major networks (ABC, CBS, NBC).  videotape Unfortunately, because of technical issues, the footage was shelved for 50 years, hidden away in another musicians “Vault.” Today (2024), with the advancements in post-production editorial tools, we present Cheaper Than Cheep. This never-before-heard-or-seen 2-hour concert program reveals the most intimate performance ever captured from the 1974 Mothers line-up, direct from the lovingly resurrected and restored original vault audio and videotape masters.
