When Return to Forever announced in 2008 it would reunite and embark on a world tour, hope were high that the band might also record a new record. It had been 30 years since Chick Corea, Stanley Clarke, Lenny White, and Al Di Meola had played together, and memories of the band’s live performance were universally fond. (Above) In Miami Beach, at the legendary Jackie Gleason Theater (now the Fillmore), RTF played the second to last show of the tour. The band had just recorded its performance at the Montreux Jazz Festival (CD/DVD), and was well rehearsed and relaxed when returning home. For Al, his father lived in Miami, and was there for the show, and Chick’s home was just across the state in Sarasota. It was there, RTF would play the reunion’s last show, and maybe where it might go from there. …

Al Di Meola Sees The Light

The Marlin Hotel stands on the corner of 12th Street and Collins Avenue in Miami Beach, a near perfect representative of the Art Deco Architecture that has defined Miami Beach style for 75 years.
Today, the historic landmark houses a fashionable late-night bar, 12 luxury suites, the Elite Modeling Agency, and Chris Blackwell’s South Beach Recording Studios.
On this sunny Saturday afternoon, the Elite Agency is conducting an open talent search. Judging by the look of the crowd on the Marlin’s patio, apparently the talent is long legs, a pretty face, and an innocent, teenage smile.
2008 — Return to Forever
“Duel Of The Tyrant and Jester” at the Jackie Gleason Theater (The Fillmore) on Miami Beach. It was the second to last show of Return to Forever’s 2008 reunion tour, followed the next night with the tour’s last show in Sarasota, Chick’s home near Tampa, on Florida’s west coast.
After 30 years apart, Return to Forever, to the pleasure of so many baby boomer fans, made the thoughtful decision to play a 2008 Summer Reunion Tour. Chick’s plan was to record the band’s performance at the Montreux Jazz Festival, and release DVDs and CDs after.
