“Self Evident”
Ani DiFranco’s personal account of bearing witness, out the window of her Brooklyn apartment, to the falling of the Twin Towers that, for decades, had defined the Lower Manhattan skyline.

Ani DiFranco (2004) at Hollywood Circle, a park in the center of Hollywood, Florida, just north of 461 Ocean Boulevard in Golden Beach, entering North Miami Beach. The Thunderbird Motel (A1A) where Duane Allman met Eric Clapton, and they, calling themselves Derek and The Dominos, recorded Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs.
At the time, 2005, Head>>Fake (Doug Wimbish and Will Calhoun) often included “Terrorism” in their live sets, playing it as something of a chaotic, wall-of-sound protest of George Bush and his invasion of Iraq.

Q&A
Holy Shit!
The only words heard over the hum of a low-flying American Airlines jetliner (Flight 77) as it passed overhead. Mysterious and strikingly unusual. Seconds later, the plane crashed into the North Tower, and exploded in a ball of fire. “HOLY SHIT” (heard in the video), is said by a member of a French television crew that was in Lower Manhattan doing an everyday story about the New York City Water Department.
“Release the Pressure” — Later that year, after a two-month pause, Living Colour resumed its reunion tour. The band was playing the shows that had been cancelled after 9-11. (Above) “RELEASE THE PRESSURE” at the Disney House of Blues in Orlando, featured bassist Doug Wimbish. His solo was a highlight of the show, Christmas week, two days before the tour ended, New Year’s Eve at CBGB in New York City. A most appropriate venue, being that CBGB was where the Living Colour story had begun. Not only the idea to reunite, but also back to the 1980s, when Vernon Reid first imagined Living Colour.*
Spiderman — Three months before 9-11, a coming-soon trailer for the original (SUMMER 2002) Spiderman was running in select theaters all across America. After the attack, though, Columbia Pictures and Marvel Enterprises were forced to stop the trailer immediately. Seeing it here, it is obvious why. Considering the now fallen Twin Towers’ important visual role in the movie’s promotion, that it would have been thought sacrilegious to show it after 9-11.
“Flying”
“I jumped out the window to get to the parking lot.”
Living Colour*
Vernon Reid* wrote the eerily sad, mellow, and melodic “Flying” as he witnessed the terrorist attack on his New York City home.

[FROM THE TOP]
The New Yorker cover (August 11, 2025) by Amy Sherald, is a portrait of the trans model and performance artist Arewà Basit. The art work was featured in Sherald’s show “American Sublime,” at the Whitney. The exhibition was originally set to open next month at the Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery, in Washington, D.C., until Sherald learned that the museum was considering removing the painting from the exhibit. Sherald, in response to her perception that the Smithsonian was capitulating to political pressure, decided to cancel her show. A spokesperson for the Smithsonian said that they were trying to contextualize rather than replace the painting, but the Trump White House criticized the inclusion of Sherald’s work. Lindsey Halligan, a special assistant to the President, released a statement claiming that the painting was a reinterpretation of “one of our nation’s most sacred symbols through a divisive and ideological lens.”
Vernon Reid* HooDoo Telemetry
“Best Friends Forever“ A statue (political statement) depicting best friends Donald Trump and Jeffrey Epstein like a couple of giddy little, hand-holding pedophiles, skipping merrily on the Washington D.C. Mall.
“Jimmy Kimmel vs. Donald Trump“ Living Colour’s contribution to the late night talk show host’s “fuck you” to the thin-skinned, toddler Donald Trump.
“Politician”
Vernon Reid* — With Hoodoo Telemetry, Reid was looking far into the musical future, but showed, with the inclusion of “Politician,” Jack Bruce’s Cream, anti-Vietnam War classic, that he remained, as always, reverant of the past.

“Danger” — Living Colour has always been a New York City band, and Vernon Reid gives credit to CBGB and the club’s owner, Hilly Kristal, for fueling the band’s explosive second stage out of the 1980s and into the musical vortex of the 1990s.
Linda Zack’s “Twin Towers” and other New York City paintings were used to visualize Doug Wimbish‘s “Danger,” a song from off CinemaSonics, his second solo record, released in 2009.

Vernon Reid and Living Colour surfaced at CBGB, the legendary New York City night club, and what the band called its “home” in the mid-1980s, the beginning of its now 40-year career.
Vernon, after having auditioned for Mick Jagger’s first solo album, Primitive Cool, had impressed the Rolling Stone enough that he took his friend Jeff Beck to see Vernon and Living Colour at CBGB. Both English stars liked what they saw. So much that Jagger helped Living Colour produce the early demos, and secure a deal with Epic Records that resulted in the band’s debut, Vivid, in 1988.

Two days before Vernon Reid and Living Colour, at Jimmy Kimmel’s request, played “Cult of Personality” to close out his show that had included Bruce Springsteen and Jeremy Allen White who played Bruce in Deliver Me From Nowhere, the film that had just been released. The show was just days after Kimmel’s return, after ABC had cancelled him, giving in to pressure exerted by Donald Trump, who whined that Kimmel was treating him “unfairly,” in his “unfunny” monologues.

In the beginning, Vernon Reid stepped out of the Free Jazz shadows of Downtown New York City and onto the surface where he and his new band Living Colour made a home at CBGB and in the Pop Punk, New Wave, Metal, Fusion movement, leading sound into the 1990s.

Living Colour was in the middle of a reunion tour when two hi-jacked, Kamikaze-like airliners struck the Twin Towers in New York City, the band’s hometown. On that day, Living Colour’s reunion, like everything else in the World, came to a stop.

1989 — When receiving International Rock Music’s “Best Newcomer” award, Vernon and Living Colour honored the black musicians who had inspired them to play Rock N Roll. That was just before their receiving IRM’s Little, White Elvis statuette, and taking the stage to tear through a 30-years-after, Heavy Metal interpretation of Chuck Berry’s Original.
