Everything Is Fusion, Or Fusion Is Nothing At All.

Before the Fusion …

Gideon Blew His Horn.

As told in the Bible, Gideon blew a trumpet to signal his army to attack the Midianites. Carrying torches and blowing horns The Israelites’ tricked the Midianites, making themselves out to be a much larger army than they actually were. The ruse worked, the Midianites panicked, fled in horror, and even killed each other in the dark.

It was like any other Saturday morning in the early 1960s on Florida’s Space Coast. On this day, as I enjoyed my pickle and mustard on Wonder Bread sandwich, and my side of Chef Boyardee Spaghetti Os. The cartoons were the regular Mighty Mouse, Underdog, Bugs Bunny, and my favorite, Bullwinkle and Friends. Memorable this Saturday, was what I remember as my first musical memory. It was my mother, Connie, in her housewife working uniform … Mom vacuuming, listening to her favorites, Louis Armstrong and Herb Alpert’s Tijuana Brass. She was obviously moved by the Trumpet, and that was understandable when she told the story of meeting Dizzy Gillespie in a small sidewalk diner in downtown Hartford, Connecticut. Connie was a teller at a nearby bank, when she went to the diner for lunch. It was next door to the _____ Theater,  the most popular venue in the city. Most popular musicians made appearances, so it wasn’t a big surprise when Connie saw none other than Dizzy Gillespie sitting at the counter. Alone sitting with a cup of coffee. …
