After collecting days of recordings from around the world, astrophysicist Carl Sagan curated, edited, and sequenced a collection of sound that he thought best represented our planetary home to any alien who might find it on the Voyager (satellite) as it raced it’s way away from Earth, and into the outer reaches of the Solar System and seeing and understanding as much of our Galaxy and the Universe of which it is a part. For us, the most important part.

The Problem We All Live With — Norman Rockwell‘s painting iconic image of the Civil Rights Movement in the United States. It depicts Ruby Bridges, a six-year-old black girl in New Orleans, Louisiana, on her way to William Frantz Elementary School, an all-white public school, November 14, 1960. It was during what was called the New Orleans school desegregation crisis, and Ruby is being escorted to school by four deputy U.S. marshals, because of threats of violence against her.

The painting was originally published as a centerfold in the January 14, 1964, issue of Look magazine. Rockwell had ended his contract with the Saturday Evening Post the previous year because the Post was placing limits on his expressing political and social views in his art, including those on civil rights and racial integration.

“Mississippi Goddamn” — Nina Simone said later that she considered “Mississippi Goddamn” her “first civil rights song.” Written in less than an hour, Simone said the song emerged in a “rush of fury, hatred, and determination,” as she “suddenly realized what it was to be black in America in 1963.”

The song was released on her album Nina Simone in Concert in 1964, which was based on recordings from three concerts she gave at Carnegie Hall earlier that year. The album was her first release for the Dutch label Philips Records and is indicative of the more political turn her recorded music took during this period.

1964 — The Story of Greenwood, Mississippi
Produced by The Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee
The laughs came because Dick Gregory was fearless in the delivery of his hard-truth, anti-racist message to a mostly white, TV-watching audience. Gregory’s popularity grew fast. His reputation was as one of the best stand up comedians working in the early 1960s, and even better when considering his seriously addressing the racial inequality he saw everywhere around him. Gregory was always funny, thoughtful, and true. When he met Medgar Evers in 1962, his anti-racism mission became absolute.

Who Do You Love?

Starting with Keith LeBlanc, and later including Skip McDonald, Doug Wimbish, and Bernard Fowler, a collaboration with London producer Adrian Sherwood (ON-U SOUND) resulted in a most creative musical time for all those involved. Little Annie was living in London, already working with Sherwood in a band called Crass. She was originally from Yonkers, and welcomed the idea of working with such a talented rhythm section, especially one made up of  New York City neighbors.

1975 — At the time, Frank Zappa, was mostly known for his comical, “Don’t- Eat-The-Yellow-Snow” lyrics, and his being a virtuoso guitarist was mostly unknown. Fact was that Zappa was among the finest composers, and instrumental players in the evolution of Jazz and Rock N Roll musics. Many called the new sound “FUSION,” a name another pioneer, drummer Lenny White* (Miles Davis and Return to Forever) avoids. He prefers to call the  genre “Jazz Rock” or “Electric Jazz.”

— Adrian Sherwood

Both New Yorkers, Little Annie Bandez and Bernard Fowler crossed musical paths in London, England. The year was 1989, the time when both, independently, joined the electronic madness being made by Adrian Sherwood in his On-U Sound Records Laboratory.

DEEP DOWN IN FLORIDA  — Tom Petty, Linda Ronstadt, and Jimmy Buffett  all made appearances in FM, the “music” movie of the day (1978). Within the next three years, all would play legendary shows in Gainesville, Florida, at the University of Florida. (Allman Brothers, Lynyrd Skynyrd, The Outlaws …)

1976 — Wood Brass & Steel
MEANWHILE, in Hartford, Connecticut and Englewood, New Jersey, a new sound was percolating. From there, Skip McDonald, Doug Wimbish, and Keith LeBlanc (The Original Sugar Hill Rhythm Section) were also looking to New York City as the first step in what they hoped to be a world-wide musical career. The Trio found their audience across the George Washington Bridge (The GW), from the Sugar Hill studio in New Jersey, uptown to Harlem and the Bronx, and into the streets and parks of all of NYC’s five Boroughs.

Before Sugar Hill, Skip, Keith, and Doug played in a band called Wood, Brass & Steel. Doug (Wimbish), the bassist, wrote “Funkanova,” a tune that made it onto every big-city Dj’s playlist. The  The Roxy, Larry Levan’s Paradise Garage, David Mancuso’s Loft, and Steve Rubell’s most popular and celebrity notorious Studio 54 created a pop social culture that made royalty of John Travolta, The Bee Gees, and Saturday Night Fever.
