Throughout his life, Miles Davis always looked to the future … not to where Jazz had been, but to where it was going. Defining, as he always had, what was “COOL.”

When leading the musical journey Miles’ eyes and ears were always open, and he believed in mixing all that he experienced. Colors, Continents, Cultures, Languages, and Creeds. Into the 1970s it was Miles finding music in the chaos after the explosive collision of Rock N Roll and Jazz.

THE BIRTH OF FUSION

In 1969, after a man had walked on The Moon, Martin Luther King and Bobby Kennedy were assassinated, and more and more young men were dying in Vietnam, Miles was listening, and being influenced by, Bob Dylan, James Brown, Janis Joplin, and Jimi Hendrix. Rock N Roll had become Psychedelic, Political, Heavy, Angry, and Hard.

Miles, as always, was looking to see music’s future. To be the leader of the all-American, musical movement called Jazz.

And at the time (1969), Miles recognized it was the electricity that was energizing the day’s music. Rock N Roll, of course, but bringing that power and intensity to Jazz was something Miles was well positioned to do.

First on his list of requirements in his new band, was electric keyboards. He knew that’s where he wanted to begin.

87/88 — Prince brought his “Sign O’ The Times” tour to a close at his Paisely Park, playing a benefit concert for the Minnesota Coalition for the Homeless. Miles Davis joined Prince for an encore that included “It’s Gonna Be A Beautiful Night,”  “Chain Of Fools,”  “Pacemaker,” and for Straight-Ahead Jazz sake, the traditional anthem “Take the ‘A’ Train.”

Overall, the New Year’s Eve show is anchored by a trio of songs, “Purple Rain,” “Auld Lang Syne,” and “1999,” that showcased Prince’s undeniable strength as a stage performer and a bandleader.

MILES DAVIS: THE BIRTH OF THE COOL
(DOCUMENTARY FILM)
“Hail to the Real Chief” is a previously unreleased Miles Davis recording featured on the soundtrack for the Stanley Nelson documentary Miles Davis: Birth of the Cool. The jazz-funk track was constructed from unused 1980s trumpet performances by Davis and new music composed by drummer Lenny White. White, along with Vince Wilburn Jr., produced the song, which features an all-star band of Miles Davis alumni and influenced artists.
The track originated from unreleased studio recordings Miles Davis made in the 1980s.
Lenny White composed the new music that integrated with the 1980s recordings. Lenny and Vince Wilburn Jr. produced the track, after assembling a band of all-star musicians to accompany Miles.

Miles is the musician who explored most all musical time and space. He’s the only to play with both John Coltrane and Prince. Coltrane, the innovative saxophonist and Be-Bop pioneer, and The Artist (known as Prince) who pushed the Fusion forward, while always respecting the past.

JAZZIZ publisher Michael Faigen was a Miles Davis fan, since the day he met him in 1991. In the first 20 years of JAZZIZ, there was at least one Miles Davis feature, many on the cover. This cover (February 2002) referred to stories told by a group of  musicians of their first meeting the legendary Miles, who since the 1940s had been the Jazzman who always defined what was “COOL.”
