The Jax Beach Pier is the area’s high-tide break, and there are various peaks off of the pier which helps spread everyone out a bit.

5. St. Augustine Beach
Underground Overview: Moving southward from Jacksonville Beach, is St. Augustine Beach. This is the best/closest beach to Gainesville’s University of Florida, so a large population of traveling surfers travel here. The main breaks include Anastasia Beach Park’s: The Entrance, Middles, and Blowhole. There are a few less-popular spots (The Gate Station) on the perimeter that are also worth checking, as well.
Type of wave: Beach Break – Rights & Lefts

6. New Smyrna Inlet
Underground Overview: New Smyrna Beach is best on east and south swells with the incoming tide; however, it works on most anything and can actually magnify the size a bit. It may be one foot along the beach, but right next to the inlet it may be three times the size. South swells suck here, so don’t bother, and at low tide, it’s not as good, as it breaks on the far outside sandbar called Shark Shallows. Oh yeah, there are tons of sharks!
Type of wave: Sand Bar – Rights & Lefts
Best Tide: high tide
Best Size: Anywhere from knee to head high
Best Swell Direction: NE, E
Best Wind Direction: W
Prime Time: Best during fall and winter, but this is one of FL’s most consistent breaks
Crowd Factor: Hardcore

8. Indialantic
Underground Overview: Indialantic’s Boardwalk is halfway between Sebastian Inlet and Cocoa Beach. The boardwalk is easy to find, thanks to the stoplight and Shagg’s Surf Shop, which is perched on A1A at the north end of the beach park. You have to pay to park legally, so make sure you have some quarters.

9. Sebastian Inlet
Underground Overview: Sebastian Inlet can get crazy crowded; you can also surf it alone. Overall, Sebastian Inlet is a great consistent wave, and everybody knows about it… so you have to be respectful to the masses. If you decide to surf First Peak, Be weary of who you drop in on. $3.25 daily park access fee required.
Type of wave: Wedgy sand bar that refracts off the jetty
Best Tide: Low tide
Best Size: Chest high to two feet overhead
Best Swell Direction: E, ESE
Best Wind Direction: W
Prime Time: All year, especially during hurricane season
Crowd Factor: Heavy at times

10. Fort Pierce
Underground Overview: North Jetty is on the north side of the Fort Pierce Inlet. Ft. Pierce has a number of peaks that break up and down the beach, and a good bowl that breaks right up against the jetty. Good lefts break off the south side of the inlet on huge swells, but it’s a very rare occurrence. More of a longboarding wave, but there are still some fun shortboard waves mixed in there.
Type of wave: Wedgy sand bar
Best Tide: Incoming to high tide
Best Size: Chest high to two feet overhead
Best Swell Direction: N, NE, SE, E
Best Wind Direction: SW
Prime Time: All year, more consistent during the winter
Crowd Factor: Heavy (especially during weekends)
Aqua Kulture Surf Shop (561) 287-7806
11. Jupiter Inlet
Underground Overview: Jupiter Inlet is one of the few good rights in South Florida; it’s just a little hard to find. Take Indiantown Road until it runs into A1A, then turn north. The park is on the far north end of the island, but you must veer right off A1A at the Circle K, the turn-off is marked, and follow a two-lane road around to the northeast. The surf is directly in front of the restroom facilities.
Type of wave: Wedgy sand bar
Best Tide: Low to incoming tide
Best Size: Head high to overhead
Best Swell Direction: NNE swell
Best Wind Direction: WNW
Prime Time: August through June
Crowd Factor: Heavy Localism

12. Juno Pier
Underground Overview: Juno Pier isn’t really a big wave spot, but it can hold some size. At head-high, the waves are very lined-up and under control. There is a midsection that usually connects, and the inside is steep and fast. Windswell breaks best on the inside, but the better onshore break is on the pier’s north side. Juno Beach Pier breaks best during the incoming tide.
Type of wave: Wedgy sand bar
Best Tide: Incoming and outgoing high tide
Best Size: Waist to overhead
Best Swell Direction: NNE, ESE windswell
Best Wind Direction: WNW, ESE
Prime Time: All year, more consistent during winter swells
Crowd Factor: Heavy

13. Reef Road (Palm Beach)
Underground Overview: Reef Road is by far the best spot in South Florida. Some call it “the east coast training ground” for Hawaiian surf. Big northeast swells are best, lines wrap around Palm Beach Inlet’s South Jetty and form long, point break lefts that push down the sandbar for more than 100 yards. It’s not usually hollow, but southwest winds can occasionally produce a few hollow sessions.
Type of wave: Sand Bar, but break like a point break
Best Tide: Incoming to high tide
Best Size: Overhead Plus
Best Swell Direction: NE
Best Wind Direction: WNW
Prime Time: Fall, Winter
Crowd Factor: Heavy Localism when it’s going off
PB Boys Club (561) 832-9299
14. Lake Worth Pier
Underground Overview: When the sandbars are settled, this pier provides the most consistent surf in South Florida. When north or northeast swells are thumping, fast, hollow waves reel along the South side sand bar. While the Northside seldom breaks, when it does it’s arguably the best peak around the pier, breaks hollow, fast, top-to-bottom rights. The Northside is blackballed between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m., seven days a week. They strictly enforce it! Last but definitely not least, localism is super heavy here.
Type of wave: sand bar
Best Tide: Incoming to high tide
Best Size: chest to head high on the inside, double overhead on the outside
Best Swell Direction: S, ESE windswell, NNE swells
Best Wind Direction: WNW is straight offshore & ESE = good windswell
Prime Time: Fall, Winter
Crowd Factor: Super Heavy Localism
15. South Beach (Miami)
Underground Overview: If the Gulf Stream looks huge up coast but it’s flat or tiny on the beach, consider making the drive south. Just remember that South Beach requires a large north or northeast swell to get good. When it’s on, overhead barrels break up and down the beach. South Beach is a fickle break with a narrow swell window.
Type of wave: Wedgy sand bar
Best Tide: Incoming to high tide
Best Size: Overhead
Best Swell Direction: N, NE
Best Wind Direction: WNW
Prime Time: Winter
Crowd Factor: Gets crowded when it’s firing
