A Day In The Life — Ten minutes on Florida’s Space Coast, including watching, with a young family, seeing its first manned launch (the space shuttle Discovery), its fiery launch and rapid ascent, streaking across the mostly clear blue, Florida sky, away from the Cape, on its way to the International Space Station, orbiting 300 miles above, outside the atmosphere of Earth.
A reminder of my mother (who is present this day), fifty years earlier, taking me, my sister, and my brother into our front yard in Cocoa, to watch Alan Shepard become the first American to see outer space.
On this launch day (2005), you’ll hear Grandma Rose shriek excitedly, before loudly calling out to her young grandson,
“Look at the ball of fire, Josh.
Look at the ball of fire.”

— HWY50
The Road Through Time [HWY50] starts near the clear, cool water of Weeki Wachee Springs, near the Gulf Coast, north of Tampa Bay. Heading east, the road travels through phosphorus mines, turpentine producing pine forest, cattle pasture, and citrus groves, as it approaches Orlando. There, since the 1980s freeze, most of the groves have given way to row after row of subdivided, often gated housing. The Florida Crossroads, where I-4 crosses Highway 50, called Colonial Drive, as you pass through old, still small and with red brick roads, downtown Orlando. East end, Goldenrod then, UCF, Orlando International Airport now. Wall-Mart, K-Mart, Target, Costco … Mormon wetlands, Nuclear Power, Abandoned Astroland, a sign, cleared land, with asphalt roads, but never any construction. Sill mostly uninhabited, Bithlo, Auto Salvage Yards, Drag Racing at the 520 cutoff. St. Johns River crossing, Airboats, Boiled P-Nuts, Gators, I-95 crossing, Titusville, Old School, Citrus Stand, Church, Shopping Plaza, US 1, across from the VAB (Vertical Assembly Building).
Earthrise — Apollo 8 astronaut, Bill Anders, captured, the moment, often described as the 20th Century’s most impactful photograph. Surprisingly, a voyage (Apollo 8) flown by the first men to see The Dark Side of the Moon, is defined by an image of Earth, the astronauts’ familiar home. From the Moon, tough, it looked “far” different, calm, peaceful, and most strikingly, INSIGNIFICANT AND SMALL.
• HWY40
State Road 40 (SR 40) is a 91.832-mile-long (147.789 km) east–west route across central Florida, running from U.S. Route 41 (US 41) in Rainbow Lakes Estates eastwards through Ocala over the Ocklawaha River and bridge and through the heart of the Ocala National Forest to State Road A1A in Ormond Beach. Names of the road include Silver Springs Boulevard in Ocala, Fort Brooks Road from Silver Springs through Astor, Butler Road in Astor, and Granada Boulevard in Ormond Beach. Former sections in Ormond Beach are named “Old Tomoka Road” and “Old Tomoka Avenue.”
A western extension of SR 40 continues from US 41 in Dunnellon as County Road 40 to the Gulf of Mexico through Marion and Levy Counties north of the Withlacoochee River. County Road 40 is named Follow That Dream Parkway west of US 19/98 after the 1962 Elvis Presley movie that was filmed in Inglis, Yankeetown and the surrounding area. East of US 19-98, the road is known as Port Avenue in Levy County, and Cedar Street, then Pennsylvania Avenue in Dunnellon. Between Dunnellon and Rainbow Lakes Estates, SR 40 serves as a not-so-hidden route along US 41.
• HWY50
State Road 50 (SR 50) runs across the center of the U.S. state of Florida through Orlando, with its termini at SR 55 (US 19) at Weeki Wachee and SR 5 (U.S. Route 1) in Titusville.
SR 50 is signed east–west. Within various counties throughout the state, the highway is signed with various names such as Cortez Boulevard in Hernando County and Colonial Drive in Orange County. The former section includes the concurrency with US 98 between Brooksville and near Ridge Manor. US 98-SR 50 is the only interchange with Interstate 75 in Hernando County.
Several portions of SR 50 east of SR 436 follow the original Cheney Highway, which was named for John Moses Cheney and was the first road to the coast from Orlando. Full travel from Orlando to Titusville on the Old Cheney Highway, however, is not possible due to the demolition of a bridge over the Econlockhatchee River.[2] At the eastern terminus of SR 50, NASA‘s Vehicle Assembly Building is visible.
State Road 408, also known as the East-West Expressway or Toll Road 408, from its western starting point near Ocoee to its eastern terminus near the University of Central Florida near Bithlo, runs almost directly parallel to SR 50, with most exits on the 408 being within a mile to 2 miles away from SR 50. The East-West Expressway was originally designed to, and still does, relieve traffic congestion on SR 50 during rush hour.
• HWY60
State Road 60 (SR 60) is an east–west route transversing Florida from the Gulf of Mexico to the Atlantic Ocean. The western terminus of SR 60 is at the Sunsets at Pier 60 site in Clearwater Beach. The eastern terminus is in Vero Beach near the Atlantic Coast just past State Road A1A. SR 60 is primarily a four lane divided highway from its western terminus through the town of Lake Wales to County Road 630 near Indian Lake Estates; from there it is a two-lane road until reaching Florida’s Turnpike at Yeehaw Junction. From there until its eastern terminus it is a divided highway.
In the Tampa Bay area it is the main route from Tampa to the Clearwater area beaches and from Tampa International Airport to northern Pinellas county. It also provides service from Tampa International Airport to the Suncoast Parkway.
• HWY70
State Road 70 (SR 70) Stretching 148 miles (238 km) across the Florida peninsula, spanning five (seven) Florida counties. Its western terminus is at US 41 (14th Street West) south of Bradenton in Manatee County; Its eastern terminus is an intersection of Virginia Avenue and South Fourth Street (U.S. Route 1/SR 5) in Fort Pierce (St. Lucie County).
• HWY80
State Road 80 (SR 80) (also known as Palm Beach Boulevard in Lee County and Southern Boulevard in Palm Beach County) is a 123.5 miles (198.8 km) route linking US 41 Business in Fort Myers and State Road A1A in Palm Beach.
The road is the northernmost of three linking Southwest Florida to South Florida via the Everglades (Alligator Alley and Tamiami Trail being the other two).
• HWY90
The Tamiami Trail is the southernmost 275 miles of U.S. Highway 41 (US 41) from Florida State Road 60 (HWY60) in Tampa to US 1 in Miami.
A portion of the road also has the hidden designation of State Road 90 (HWY90).
The 163-mile (262 km) north–south section (hidden SR 45) extends to Naples, whereupon it becomes an east–west road (hidden SR 90) crossing the Everglades (and forming part of the northern border of Everglades National Park). It becomes Southwest 8th Street in Miami-Dade County, famous as Calle Ocho in the Little Havana section of Miami, before ending east of Miami Avenue as Southeast 8th Street at Brickell Avenue in Brickell, Downtown Miami.
