Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band
Summer of Love
“Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds“ is a song by the Beatles on their 1967 Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band album. The song was written primarily by John Lennon with help from Paul McCartney, and credited to the Lennon–McCartney songwriting partnership. Lennon said that it was a nursery school drawing by his son Julian is what inspired the song, including the “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds” title, which is what Julian titled his drawing of an old lady.
Just before the album’s release, there was talk that the first letters of each of the nouns in the title intentionally spelled “LSD,” the colloquial name for the hallucinogenic drug, lysergic acid diethylamide. Lennon always denied that “Lucy” was a “drug” song, saying the psychedelic imagery was inspired by Lewis Carroll‘s Alice in Wonderland.
