After finding out “his” band had worked on the high-profile projects, Robinson demanded a cut of the money. Not owing Robinson, but fearing his mob-boss personality, Skip and Doug fled to Philadelphia, and joined MUSIQUE, the then popular Dance Group, three singers … something of a Disco era Supremes.
Keith, instead, stayed behind, and made “No Sell Out (Malcolm X).”

Keith asked Betty, a long-time friend, if he could use Malcolm’s speeches, cutting them to his drum beats. She gave Keith her full blessing and support, and Keith went on to make “No Sell Out,” considered the first “sampling” ever committed to vinyl. After recording several cuts of the tune, Keith stored the tapes on a shelf in the Sugar Hill studio.
(Joe) Robinson, claiming he owned the record, because it had been made in his studio, had 500,000 vinyl records pressed with the Sugar Hill label. Wife and Sugar Hill co-owner, Sylvia Robinson, was credited as “No Sell Out’s” writer, and there was no mention of Keith.
Later, Keith, with Betty by his side, won the Federal “Theft of Creative Property” suit he filed against Sugar Hill Records and the Robinsons. Keith received an undisclosed financial settlement, and not long after, before the end of 1984, the Robinsons closed Sugar Hill Records, and Hip-Hop’s original label was history.
Soon after Sugar Hill’s demise, Keith, at the TOMMY BOY STUDIO in New York, met Adrian Sherwood, and within the month, moved to London to join the Englishman’s ON-U Sound Records.

During the house craze of the late nineties, “Funkanova,” Wimbish’s Wood Brass & Steel tune, was sampled often, most notably by Ashley Beedle‘s Black Science Orchestra “New Jersey Deep,” and by MAW‘s Bucketheads project, “Come and be Gone.”

Sugar Hill Records [Joe and Sylvia Robinson]
The three members of Sugarhill Records’ original house band were instrumental in laying the musical foundation for so many of Hip-Hop’s first MCs, and the billion-dollar industry and culture built upon it.
Skip McDonald (guitar), Doug Wimbish (bass), and Keith LeBlanc (drums) wrote, produced, and played on many of the tunes known today as Hip-Hop anthems: “Rapper’s Delight,” “The Message,” “White Lines,” “Apache,” and so many others, now used to sell shoes, computers, phones, perfumes, and alcohol beverages of all kinds …
But the attention was short lived. In 1985, working for Sugar Hill Records, specifically owner Joe Robinson, became “difficult.” Or as Skip, Doug, and Keith said, “dangerous.”
