[FROM THE TOP]

Some would say, Eric Clapton never sounded better than the 10 years between the late ’60s when he was in a love-sick depression and heroin addiction when playing in the late 60s when he played with the The Yardbirds and Cream, and the late ’70s when he had his alcoholic breakdown.

Jon Stoll was 16 years old when he, with help from his Palm Beach parents, started Fantasma Productions, his first in learning the business of concert promotion. He started small, in 1966, booking his first act, B.B. King, who was also somewhat “small” at the time.

Twenty years later, Fantasma had grown to be one of the biggest concert promoters in the United States, especially in the Southeast and South Florida, hosting the Rolling Stones’ Steel Wheels 1989 Tour at the Orange Bowl in Little Havana, Miami.

Through the years, King remained close to Stoll, and included a stop in West Palm Beach (Chitlin’ Style) on any tours where it was possible.

Blow-Up

The Yardbirds appear in the 1966 murder mystery, about a photographer who sees what he thinks is a murder in the background of one of his photographs. The film is set in London, where at the time, the Yardbirds were among the most popular of the English bands whose guitarists were influenced by American Bluesmen: Muddy Waters, Howlin’ Wolf, and The Three Kings, B.B., Albert, and Freddie.

The Rock N Roll anthem made most popular by Aerosmith was written by Tiny Bradshaw in 1951, given a Rock N Roll, distorted guitar make over by the Johnny Burnett Trio in 1956, taken further by the Yardbirds’ Jimmy Page, who took it to his new band, Led Zeppelin, and for the first year, used it to open shows. After, Steven Tyler, a Led Zeppelin fan (follower) chose to play Aerosmith’s version on its 1974 album, Get Your Wings, and has featured the song in Aerosmith’s live shows ever since.

In the late 1940s, B.B. King toured the Chitlin’ Circuit in the Southeast, including a stop in Gainesville, Florida at a joint called The Cotton Club. The Cotton Club, originally built as a Post Exchange at Camp Blanding, became a popular spot for African American musicians and audiences during the Jim Crow era. It was one of many venues across the South where King and other Blues players earned their reputations and popularized the Blues.

Clarence “Gatemouth” Brown @ Tobacco Road, the notorious bar on the Miami River. Tobacco Road’s history was rich. In the ’20s it was a speakeasy, in the ’40s a brothel, and in 1985, the Best Blues bar in Miami.

Upstairs, in the Red Room was a bar and a small stage where the music was played. Saturday night between Christmas and New Year’s, “Gatemouth” Brown was onstage, playing to two hundred, who overfilled the room. Out of the holiday madness, someone screamed out “THE THRILL IS GONE,” loud enough that even Brown and the band noticed.

“If I hear any more of that B.B. King shit, I’ll leave right now.” Brown scolds the audience. Brown took the room going quiet as a sign that the crowd got the message. After the short pause, Brown motions to the band, and they pick up where they left off.

Down South, crossing paths on the Chitlin’ Circuit, Brown and King were friendly, and had a mutual respect for each other as musicians. Both too were known for their “strong,” alpha personalities, and it understandable that the always ornery Brown would have taken the calling out of a B.B. King tune as a sign of disrespect.

Ten years later at the Musicians Exchange in Fort Lauderdale. Orange Blossom Special. Brown playing fiddle with a young bassist and drummer, who talked about the difficulty of being on the road with Brown. Worse because a judge in a mediation of a (non-violent) doestic dispute between Brown and his wife, ordered that Brown was to refrain from his routine of having his pipe packed with weed.

1993 — Musician’s Exchange: Gato Barbieri, Billy Cobham, John Mayall w/Coco Montoya and Walter Trout. Government Mule, Scott Putesky, Jaco Pastorius Tribute …

The Musicians Exchange in Fort Lauderdale was a significant and unique venue for musicians throughout the 1990s. It evolved beyond just a nightclub and was described as a “one-stop center for musicians”. Its owner and founder, Don Cohen, created a space that encompassed a variety of services for the local music community.
Musicians Exchange in the 1990s: The club’s focus was strongly on live music, particularly jazz and blues, attracting both national and local talent to its stage.
Over 1500 musical acts were hosted at the Musicians Exchange between its inception in 1976 and 1996.
It was recognized for providing a platform for original music indie bands, potentially through outdoor concerts in the back parking lot.
Cohen also managed several local musicians who benefited from his expertise and commitment to promoting their work.
Evolution and challenges
Initially opened on Sunrise Boulevard in 1976, the club moved to downtown Fort Lauderdale in 1988, then returned to Sunrise Boulevard in 1989.
In 1996, Cohen sold the club to RHA Associates Inc., who moved it to downtown Delray Beach. This iteration of the club closed after only seven months, reportedly due to a summer slowdown and an unpopular upscale menu.
The Musicians Exchange then merged with the New York Entertainment Cafe at 1432 N. Federal Highway, marking its return to Fort Lauderdale in 1998.
Challenges faced by the club included the rising costs of featuring artists, limited seating capacity, a perceived lack of city support, and neighborhood deterioration, according to Cohen.
Community and impact
The Musicians Exchange played a significant role in the South Florida music scene, fostering a sense of community among local musicians and providing a place for them to connect and share their passion.
It was considered by some to be a legendary and iconic establishment that significantly impacted the local music landscape.
Many remembered it as a “one of a kind venue” on Sunrise Boulevard.
