Truth Be Told
Bill Hicks

1989 — Dangerous

“Burning Issue” — When a group of United States senators (including New York’s Hillary Clinton) wanted to make it a crime to burn an American Flag, Bill, as always,  EXPRESSED HIS HONEST OPINION, DIRECTLY, AGGRESIVELY, and often PORNOGRAPHICALLY.

A Bill Hicks biography (film), the first after his death, including interviews with Jay Leno, David Letterman, and many other comedians, family, and friends. YouTube won’t allow it to be posted on the site, forcing you into the algorithmic shitstorm to see it. Though, I too would issue a “WARNING.” If one is easily offended and blindly faithful, Bill might not be, as an English gentleman might say, “your cup of tea,” or Bill would have said, he absolutely wouldn’t be your fucking cup of tea.

Burning Issues
(((AUDIO))) — Late one night in a small New York City nightclub (1989), BILL HICKS expressed his ALWAYS-HONEST OPINION about a group of U.S. Senators, New York’s Hillary Clinton included, who wanted to make it a crime to burn an American flag. As so often was the case, Bill thought otherwise, AND SAID SO, POINTEDLY.

KKK Fantasy — When South Florida’s KKK Grand Wizard was asked why he chose to have a parade on Palm Beach’s Worth Avenue (July 28, 1990), he said “Because our kind of (white) people live here.”

Sweet Elvis — On State Road 80, a Florida road less traveled, a local gentleman sits with his roadside wares, hoping any of the few passing motorists might stop and make a purchase. SR80 is a road, that runs between Palm Beach, on the ocean, next to Mar-a-Lago,* and Lake Okeechobee,* where Florida Sugar* grows in the black muck between the lake and the Everglades.*

Carl Hiaasen‘s Double Whammy is a dark comedy set on Lake Okeechobee, about a mysterious murder on the professional Bass fishing circuit.

Cane, was a television series, (CBS) that followed a family (Sugar Dynasty) in Miami. Cane was fiction, but anyone knowing South Florida recognized the it’s similarity to both the Bacardi and Fanjul* families.

The largely Haitian, cane-cutting communities in the small towns on the south edge of the lake (Pahokee, Clewiston, Belle Glade) are some of Florida’s most impoverished. Thirty miles east on State Road 80, is the state’s wealthiest town. Standing on the beach where SR80 meets the Atlantic Ocean is Mar-a-Lago, on Palm Beach. The always famous (now infamous) Spanish estate, that stands as an ornate architectural gateway to Fantasy Island.

Time Tunnel (1989)

Always socially conscious and politically active, Living Colour was thrust into the universal spotlight when Mick Jagger invited the band to open for the Rolling Stones on their Steel Wheels (resurrection) tour in 1989. Here, members of the band discuss the tour, which is well represented with clips from the North American run in 1989, including the “It’s Only Rock N Roll” encore in Montreal, where Vernon Reid* wears a “BURN BABY BURN,” American flag T-shirt.

Since the 16th Century Renaissance, those claiming to speak for God and Jesus, so often saw art and science as the language spoken by the Devil’s Diciples.
BILL HICKS (CBS 48 HOURS)*
When CBS (48 Hours) produced an episode on the comedy world, it chose Bill Hicks to represent life on the road as a stand up comedian. Hicks, like hundreds of others, strived to be booked on David Letterman’s late night television show. 48 Hours followed Bill as he prepared for his eighth Late Night performance.
