1971-1981
What a difference a decade makes. After “winning” its “independence,” the University of Florida’s student newspaper, proved it was better when free of UF administration control.

Insurrection Day
thursday
october 6, 1971
vol 65 no 75
University of Florida president Stephen C. O’Connell threatened Alligator editor Ron Sachs with arrest, prosecution, and imprisonment, if he dared to publish a list of women’s health care and abortion providers. Such an act would violate both the university’s rules, and Florida law. Undeterred, Sachs chose to take the risk, saying “I’ve done worse things than hand out newspapers.”
Independence Day
thursday
february 1, 1973
vol 65 no 75
Two years after the insurrection, The Florida Alligator severed all ties with UF, and vacated its office in the Reitz Union. The paper was re-named The “Independent” Florida Alligator, and future staffs (still made of UF students) were filled with aggressive writers, photographers, illustrators, and editors, who set out to light Gainesville and the University of Florida on Journalistic fire.
