Not long after Tom Petty (Mudcrutch) left Gainesville, he emerged as The Heartbreakers, and was well on his way to Rock N Roll fame and fortune. All of Gainesville and the University of Florida were excited when Petty was scheduled to play UF’s 1981 Homecoming. An anticipated show, that lived up to its billing.

Before the Heartbreakers, Tom Petty led Mudcrutch, the hot shit Gainesville band that was playing well with the many other Florida and Georgia bands that were defining the new genre of music called Southern Rock.
•HALLOWEEN BALL UF’S NOTORIOUS NIGHT OF INSIDIOUS TEMPTATION) Legendary was Mudcrutch’s performance at the Second Annual Halloween Ball in 1971, Midnight to Sunrise, a show that set the standard for all Halloween Balls to follow, and high on the list of all University of Florida legend and lore.
