Ride Captain Ride [PG.2]
Blues Image
1970 —  Mike Pinera was 18 years old when he moved from Tampa to Miami, where he opened a Rock N Roll club, Thee Image, on the beach. His group, Blues Image, served as the club’s house band, backing many older Bluesmen who toured solo, with no band, only their guitar.

Dub’s Steerhouse — The bar on the outskirts of town. The one with nickel beers and the topless go-go dancers. Where Tom Petty, Don Felder, Marty Jourard, and most all of Gainesville’s Rock N Roll talent got its start.

[FROM THE TOP]

“Ride Captain Ride”
1970 —  Mike Pinera had moved from Tampa to Miami, where he opened Three Image, a Rock N Roll club on the beach for which Blues Image served as the house band. While there, Pinera opened shows for many popular acts, including Cream, Frank Zappa, the Grateful Dead, and the Yardbirds.

1971 — Apollo 14
This time, Alan Shepard, the first American in Space, was piloting an Apollo Mission to The Moon. Before his return, Shepard had delivered a  special edition of TODAY (“Florida’s Spaceage Newspaper”), and put in a round of golf, hitting 6-irons toward a number of in-the-distant craters.
1972 — Quang Tri, Vietnam
1973 — KOHOUTEK (COMET IN THE SKY)
1974 — When Wayne Cochran brought his show to Gainesville’s favorite Dub’s Steer House. Playing in Cochran’s C.C. Riders was a 22-year-old Jaco Pastorius, a hot shit bassist from Fort Lauderdale, who also played with saxophonist Ira Sullivan and guitarist Pat Metheney at the University of Miami, and was frequently seen playing private (house) parties in Palm Beach.

You WILL Pledge Allegiance to the Flag.
Stephen C. O’Connell’s Holy War
1969 — UF’s most notorious president begins his tenure-long (seven years), throughout the VIETNAM WAR, to demand all University of Florida professors and employees sign a LOYALTY (ANTI-COMMUNISM) OATH as a requirement to work for Florida’s first, and largest, state university.

When the Florida Alligator waged war against the University of Florida, not just Gainesville, but THE WHOLE DAMN WORLD WAS SHAKING. Thousands were being killed in Vietnam, and NASA was shooting astronauts to the moon. The Alligator was an “independent” and honest witness to it all.
