[FROM THE TOP]
1982 — It had been 11 years since Apollo 17 marked the end of NASA’s manned missions to the Moon in 1972.. launched a man into space since Apollo 17, the last mission to the Moon in 1972. A decade later, the NASA made its return to space with Columbia, it’s first shuttle mission, with Commander John W. Young and Pilot Robert L. Crippen aboard. Columbia’s launch was long anticipated, and at the historic moment, April 12, 1981 (07:00:04 AM) the Alligator was there to see it, witness it, document it.
1981 — Tom Petty had moved to California, and rocketed to international fame with the release of Damn The Torpedoes in 1979. Gainesville and UF were anxious to welcome their favorite son home. [STORY]
