After severing all ties to the university in 1971, and changing its name (adding “Independent”), The Alligator, consistently filled its staff with young, aggressive, and passionate writers, photographers, and editors whose mission it was to set Gainesville, UF, and all of Florida on journalistic fire.

February 1, 1973 — The day The Florida Alligator became The Independent Florida Alligator, the newspaper took advantage of it’s right to free speech, and said “Fuck You” to Stephen C. O’Connell and his right-wing, Christian administration. Until then, O’Connell and earlier UF presidents thought they owned The Alligator, and it was UF’s propagandist tool when necessary. The newly independent Alligator took its journalistic obligation seriously
