Before the Heatbreakers, Tom Petty’s band was called Mudcrutch, and was known as one of Gainesville’s best. Tom wrote “Depot Street,” a story of a high school girlfriend who lived on the other side of town, in 1971. That was the year Mudcrutch would play it’s legendary midnight to sunrise show at the Second Annual Halloween Festival, before it was called the “Ball.”

“The Greeks Don’t Want No Freaks”
At the same time, Don Felder (The Eagles) was also living in Gainesville, in his own band was alongside Mudcrutch, playing Saturday night parties on Fraternity Row.
“Oh, Camil” by Graham Nash
Stephen Stills (Buffalo Springfield, Crosby Stills Nash and Young) also lived in Gainesville.
