“Nudity in itself is not lewd and bad.”

— Gainesville city commissioner Gary Junior

Not many in Gainesville were offended by the nudity on Leonardo’s Pizza By The Slice sign on University Avenue, but there was a group of local Christians who screamed that they were … offended, that is.

Leonardo’s Pizza by the Slice has been cited by a city official for a having an “obscene, indecent, or immoral” version of Leonardo Da Vinci’s “Vitruvian Man“ on its sign in front of its 1254 University Avenue restaurant.

The yellow sign has a man in the middle and two women on the side. All three are nude and their natural wonders are quite visible.

Nicky Niboonkit, general manager of both Leonardo’s pizza parlors in Gainesville, said Monday “the whole thing is stupid.” He said the sign has been up for eight years and still has a valid city permit.

But apparently Al Davis, who enforces the city and building and sign codes, found the sign a violation of a January 19, 1981 street graphic ordinance which prohibits such signs.

City Commissioner Jean Chalmers said it is unfair to lay any blame on Davis, who she said is “only doing his job.”

“Al didn’t initiate the complaint,” Chalmers said. “Quite a few called his office, complaining about the public nudity.”

And the sign has no redeeming features, if I may say so facetiously,” she added.

“Why didn’t he (the artist) stick to the graphics on the national sign? Why did he deviate from the menu,” which has stars covering up the offending parts Chalmers asked partly in humor. “Why did he deviate from Leonardo Da Vinci, who’s got a pretty fair reputation?”

While agreeing that Davis is only doing his job, Mayor Commissioner Gary Junior said “I don’t think it falls under the street graphic ordinance.”

“Nudity in itself is not lewd and bad,” he said.
