The University of Florida campus offered much in the way of Architectural style, in the tradition of the University Auditorium, standing to the iconic Century Tower.

In 1905, William Augustus Edwards faced a daunting task: How to make a world-class university out of a field of sand and pine.

To make something out of nothing, he turned to the gravitas of architecture in the Collegiate Gothic style: dignity in the brick, whimsy in the cast stone flourishes, elegance in the arches.

Edwards’ tenure ended in 1925, but his influence lived on. Rudolph Weaver, both university architect and dean of the School of Architecture, adopted Collegiate Gothic style, and the Weaver era was marked by artistic elements like
the Mucozo Tower at Sledd Hall and the fanciful names of famous chemists in the stonework on Leigh Hall, home to chemistry and pharmacy classes.

Guy Fulton took his turn as UF architect in 1944 and inherited a tsunami: a flood of WWII veterans returning
to school on the GI Bill and a campus soon to add women students. The wartime enrollment of about 600 students exploded to more than 10,000. Fulton’s modern approach
to Collegiate Gothic style was still compatible with the two eras that came before him and helped create the “harmonious whole” predicted in the 1906 University Record.

The Plaza of The Americas, on which they sat represented Gainesville’s Ground Zero, and radiating from there … downtown, on the outskirts of town, and into the many, North Florida cultural and geographic mysteries.
