Tom Kennedy (1968-1971)

Working at The Alligator was a high point of my college years. The Alligator gave me a chance to hone the skills I was initially exposed to in the classroom. It helped me develop the discipline necessary to meet daily newspaper deadlines with a consistently good product. I also learned valuable lessons about newsroom teamwork, and my responsibilities to colleagues and subjects alike. While The Alligator experience gave me a chance to develop the photographic techniques necessary for professional success, as important, was it showed me the power of photojournalism to touch readers’ lives. Those lessons continue to serve me well today.”

In the early 1980s, the group of photographers at the Alligator and the Gainesville Sun were one journalistic family.

DARKROOM QUALITY —  John Kaplan, John Moran, Tom Kennedy, Gary Wolfson, Carla Hotvedt, and Bill Wax. In 1980, The Gainesville Sun photo department was led by Tom Kennedy, and included three other Alligator alum (John Moran, Carla Hotvedt, and Bill Wax). Kaplan, after winning a Pulitzer Prize while at the Pittsburgh (?), returned to The University of Florida, as the College of Journalism’s Dean of Photography.
