THE CAMPUS GARGOYLES — The stone carvings in the arches and walls of Buchman Hall, the University of Florida’s oldest dormitory, tell a story of Love and Fantasy, Religion, Racism, and War. The story of an unlikely friendship between MUCOZO (a young Timucua chief), JUAN ORTIZ (a marooned Spanish sailor), and Princess Hirrihigua who had been left behind by his own landing party that had gone ashore in Tampa Bay.
From their perch, looking down into the oak-shaded Murphree Dormitory quad, the stone faces watch the students living their lives in the same North Florida space where they had lived 500 years before. (Florida Museum of Natural History)

Strand Swamps in Southwest Florida: These areas are known for their persistent humidity and unique orchids and bromeliads, like the ghost orchid and Guzmania, found nowhere else in the United States.
Southeast Florida: Jagged limestone karst in this region hosts upland tropical forests that create a wall of trees in some areas.
