ghosts of florida’s past

The stone carvings in the arches and walls of the University of Florida’s oldest dormitory, tell a story of Racism, Religion, Fantasy, and War. Valor, Compassion, Love, and Forgiveness. The story of an unlikely friendship between MUCOZO, a young Timucua chief, and JUAN ORTIZ, a Spanish sailor who was left behind by the search party that had gone ashore in Tampa Bay.
From their perch, looking down, into the oak-shaded Murphree Dormitory quad, the stone faces watch the students going about their everyday college lives in the same North Florida space where Mucozo, Ortiz & The Princess lived their Florida Native lives 500 years before. It was a tall task washing the windows inside the University Auditorium.
Always popular were performances, many on Halloween, by world renowned keyboardists, playing the magnificent pipe organ that sits on the stage at the center of the Auditorium’s attention.
