The University Auditorium, since its completion in 1921, has stood at the center of UF’s oak-filled campus. Inside the auditorium, a magnificent pipe organ, sitting in the middle of an equally grand stage, serves as a showpiece, accompanying Century Towers tolling bells.
Carved into the cathedral’s cypress rafters is a collection of macabre figures (gargoyles), each representing a way of college life (academics, athletics, medicine, physics, mathematics, music, agriculture, religion, astronomy, and art).
Visible to those in the balcony, the figures stand still and silent, high above, looking down upon the auditorium’s stage.
Through the years, Student Government Productions (SGP) booked a number of renowned organists to play the Auditorium in the weeks around Halloween (Oct. 30). From the balcony, looking down at the stage, the players sat at the organ, with their back to the audience, as if they were Captain Nemo, playing eerie fugues and taking the listeners 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea.
A mood, appropriate for the time and place, with the notorious Halloween Ball* happening just outside on the Plaza of The Americas,* under the watch of Century Tower,* UF’s architectural Ground Zero.

FRANK ZAPPA* played the Florida Gym in 1981, in what might have been Student Government Productions’ best Fall Music Lineup ever.
After a long Summer break, the look of the next quarter was appreciated.

Welcoming students back to UF’s first ever Fall semester (rather than quarter) in 1981, Student Government Productions booked a series of musicians for what turned out to be one of the most memorable seasons in University of Florida musical history.

THE CAMPUS GARGOYLES — The stone carvings in the arches and walls of Buchman Hall, the University of Florida’s oldest dormitory, tell a story of Love and Fantasy, Religion, Racism, and War. The story of an unlikely friendship between MUCOZO (a young Timucua chief), JUAN ORTIZ (a marooned Spanish sailor), and Princess Hirrihigua who had been left behind by his own landing party that had gone ashore in Tampa Bay.
From their perch, looking down into the oak-shaded Murphree Dormitory quad, the stone faces watch the students living their lives in the same North Florida space where they had lived 500 years before. (Florida Museum of Natural History)
