King Crimson in Cin City (1975) First trip to Gainesville to visit Rockledge High School mates who had left for UF the first year after graduatig in 1974. Kevin Oates, Gus Oenbrink (Bachman Turner Overdrive, “Blue Collar”), Tom Daymude (Doobie Brothers), Kathy Hollister floating in pool, Alligator front page (1979).
After Art Show Jam at Kevin’s (1980) Watercolorist and family from Bat Cave, North Carolina. In town, on the Art Show traveling carnival. Wife bathing two toddlers, a boy and a girl, in Kevin Turley’s white, cast iron tub, typical of the 1930s wooden houses built around downtown Gainesville (Duck Pond). Open door and big, four-pane window looking outside. Grilling hotdogs and burgers, leftover beer in last night’s keg, still on ice. Kevin’s friend, happy hour (afternoons) at O’Grady’s, playing the old, standup piano in the middle of the sparsely furnished living room. Acoustically rustic, 12-foot ceilings, stomp dacing on the weathered, hardwood floor. Barbara Hansen, room over garage, Uelsmann print with tire track, Watching the Miracle on Ice, 4-foot bong, terrazzo floor, Turley knew the result, and throughout jokingly threatened to reveal the end.
Jim Virga’s friend Pat at Mai Kai (1982) Road trip to Fort Lauderdale with Jim Virga, a new photographer on the Alligator staff. Drove down to see his friend Pat, a Rock N Roll guitar player, at the Legendary Mai Kai Tiki bar on Federal Highway. Long, to the waist, hair, a white, suede suit with fringe on the sleeves. Most memorable, a jam in a Chicago cover. Years later in West Palm Beach, Contemporary Jazz, Linen jacket and a Fedora, Later still at the Bahia Cabana. Travis McGee slip, Dion (“Abraham, Martin, and John”) down the road. Hear “Black Magic Woman,” good enough that it could have been Santana himself, but it was Pat, sitting on a stool, solo with a beat box.
Game Day at Kurt Lishka’s — October 3, 1992 UF vs. Kentucky, FSU vs. Miami in Tallahassee, Despite losing a Sugar Bowl bid if Miami beat the Seminoles, the UF-FSU rivalry was so intense that those in the house still wanted to see UM win. the Sugar Bowl if Miami beat FSU, those in the room still rooted against FSU. Last second field goal (?). The sweet smell of fresh cut buds, David Grisman, Jerry Garcia, “Dogs,” Che Guevara. Keg on the small stoop, save the dolphins, Dana (bjorn borg-looking) guitar, Pink Floyd.
