1974 was a good year for Alligator photographer John Moran to be the house photographer at the Florida Theater, a popular University Avenue music venue as far back as the 1930s.

Earl Petty (b/ Diane Julin) Tom’s father still living in the small house in southwest Gainesville. He lives alone now, tending to the garden out back, and entertaining the teenage girls from Orlando, who make the 50-mile trip up I-75 to Gainesville to watch Tom’s videos with his dad. They feel that much closer to Tom himself.

1971 Tom Petty and his band Mudcrutch, headlined the Second Annual Halloween Ball in 1971. The band opened at Midnight, under a near full Moon, and played throughout the night, until the sun rose on tomorrow. The show was of a quality that all future Balls would be compared.

In the beginning, the Ball started late, around midnight, featured local bands, including Tom Petty and his band, Mudcrutch, who would start at 12 and play throughout the night, until the sun rose the next day.

1979 “Casa Dega” is a song about a small, Central Florida town (south of Ocala and west of Daytona Beach) that is home to a number of psychics, fortune tellers, and mystics who do personal readings in their homes for anyone who dares to ask.
