ghosts of florida’s past
THE CAMPUS GARGOYLES — The stone carvings in the arches and walls of Buchman Hall, the University of Florida’s oldest dormitory, tell a story of Love and Fantasy, Religion, Racism, and War. The story of an unlikely friendship between MUCOZO (a young Timucua chief), JUAN ORTIZ (a marooned Spanish sailor), and Princess Hir who had been left behind by his own landing party that had gone ashore in Tampa Bay.
From their perch, looking down into the oak and pine-shaded Murphree Dormitory quad, the gargoyles and stone faces watch the students live their lives in the same North Florida space where they had lived 500 years before. (Florida Museum of Natural History)
