“Making Movies”
No matter when and where any of us are, there are popular, Hollywood depictions of the lives we are living. The 1970s and ’80s in Gainesville was no exception.

1978 — FM (The Movie) was the templated, young people’s music movie of the day. A familiar story of an independent radio station in Los Angeles being bought out by a nationwide corporate network. A movie that wasn’t a “box office” success, but produced a certified platinum (FM) SOUNDTRACK. The record featured the title track, Steely Dan’s “FM,” and songs by Tom Petty, Linda Ronstadt, and Jimmy Buffett, who all appear in the movie. All would later play shows in Gainesville, at the University of Florida, and become influential characters in North Florida’s Greener Age of Southern Rock.
