1974 — After his installation as the next Christian president of the University of Florida, Robert Quarles Marston almost immediately clashed with the now completely “Independent” Florida Alligator. The newspaper and Marston’s paths and agenda’s became increasingly entangled, and by 1978, the relationship became more confrontational. Alligator reporter Barry Klein was aggressively pursuing what appeared to be Marston’s unethical, and possibly illegal, business practices, and Marston was showing he was more than willing to fight back, against Klein, the Alligator, and free speech. Same as O’Connell, the previous UF president, who had to imprison editor Ron Sachs who had violated not only Florida law, but more impactfully, O’Connell’s evangelical and “patriotic” sensibility.
