[FROM THE TOP]
JUST SAY NO? — Cartoonist Pat Rice’s depiction of John Belushi reminded us of Ronald Reagan and wife Nancy’s “Just Say No” war against drugs. When the Reagans announced the bumpersticker campaign, it was done just two weeks after John Belushi, the popular Saturday Night Live) comedian, had died (March 5, 1982) in a room at the Beverly Hills Hotel.
UNDER FIRE (1983) — Hollywood love story about two journalists, a photographer and a writer, who cover more than the revolution in Nicaragua.
THE DOCTRINE IS DEAD — Alan Bookman’s poetic eulogy of John Monroe’s condemnation of war.
DON WRIGHT — After the chaotic turn of the 1980s, and the arrival of Ronald and Nancy Reagan, the word of next four years was “NO.” NO NUKES, NO OIL, NO CHOICE. Trouble still raged in Iran, and then, Ronald Reagan and his Republican party saw political “value” in running guns and cocaine in and out of Central America … Especially Nicaragua, where the third-world water was fine.
Don Wright, was at the Miami News in 1982 when Central America began to attract much of the National and World attention. Wright always had a Pulitzer Prize-winning way of telling a big story in a graphically quick way, and then added a few choice words to emphasize the point.
