1912 — Henry Morrison Flagler (above), wearing the white skimmer hat), arrived in Key West (January 22), aboard his Overseas Railroad. Later that year (September 24) the University of Florida printed the first edition of its daily newspaper, The Florida Alligator. Since, The Alligator has been published continuously, and has evolved dramatically. Never more than in 1971, when the student newspaper fought for Abortion rights, against the always Christian University of Florida administration. [INCREDIBLE PULP]

The Mysterious Murphree Stones* — The gargoyles and ghostly figures carved into walls and arches all across the University of Florida campus tell stories of exploration, education, love, and war. They’re the stories of Gainesville, going back as far as when Spanish sailors and North Floridian natives were meeting, and getting to know each other.
The first Florida Alligator was little more than a transcription of president Albert A. Murphree’s opening speech to UF’s Inaugural Class of 1912.

Flagler’s Moon* — Earlier in 1912, the year of The Florida Alligator‘s first edition, Henry Morrison Flagler, the first Gilded Age Floridian, realized his life-long, railroad baron dream. He rode his own FLORIDA EAST COAST RAILWAY car into Key West. For Flagler, whose effort to reach America’s southernmost point was first called a “FOLLY,” reaching the small Caribbean island fulfilled an explorer’s dream. KEY WEST HAD ALWAYS BEEN FLAGLER’S MOON, the end of the Florida road.

Pretty As A Florida Picture — When photographer Spencer Tunick was looking for the picture to fill the “Florida” position in his 50-state “NAKED STATES TOUR” on which he and his wife, Krissy were driving across America, looking to take a nude (portrait) in all the United States. It was Missy, a University of Central Florida theater student in Orlando who called Spencer, who she had met at a Phish concert in Vermont, telling him she had a good idea, and that she wanted to be the subject of his PICTURE OF “FLORIDA.”

Henry Morrison Flagler (holding hat in circle) greets a crowd upon his arrival on the first train into Key West, Florida, January 22, 1912. Flagler built the Florida East Coast Railway as a way of linking his string of hotels and other properties in Florida, finally stretching the railway across seven miles of open water in into Key West, the southernmost point in the United States. (Hutton Archive)
1912 — Henry M. Flagler was aboard the first (his own) OVERSEAS RAILROAD train to arrive in Key West, January 22, 10:43 a.m. For Flagler, personally, it was as if he had landed, and was stepping onto the Moon. His Moon. Since starting his Florida East Coast Railway in St. Augustine, with plans to continue south, Flagler told the World that his ultimate destination was Key West. The southernmost spot in America. A small island, 150 miles south of Miami, and less than 90 miles north of Cuba. As John F. Kennedy had made his dream of putting a man on the Moon, fifty years later, Flagler expressed to the World his Florida’s first land-developer’s goal. His explorer’s eye was focused on Key West, the last in a string of small islands that stretched into the Florida Straits.
After decades struggling with the tropical environment (Heat/ Hurricanes/ Mosquitos) and the engineering difficulties to build a bridge across the ocean, Henry Morrison Flagler, in 1911, could see the light at the end of the tunnel. His crews were working on the last leg of his East Coast Florida Railroad. Near connecting the last two, southernmost keys running south into the Florida Straits. Key West, just 90 miles north of Cuba was Flagler’s “Moon.” The impossible dream he had since building his first hotel in St. Augustine, the Ponce de Leon in 1888.
