“Gator On The Lawn”
The Who, What, Where, When, and Why of life in Gainesville and at the Universiy of Florida. Brought to you [SINCE 1973*] by The Independent Florida Alligator.

((( GATOR LIFE* )))

“The Incredible Pulp” by don addis (’66)

[FROM THE TOP]

The year the Florida Alligator won, earned, or took its “INDEPENDENCE,” hometown boy TOM PETTY* was the leader of a hot-shit, local Rock N Roll band called Mudcrutch.* It was the beginning of Petty’s high-speed journey starting at Dub’s Steer House (out on 441) and downtown at Lillian’s Music Store. Petty’s road was fast. He moved to Los Angeles in 1974, and by 1981 when he was scheduled to play the most highly anticipated HOMECOMING, he played an important role, not only in the evolution of Gainesville and the University of Florida, but to all The World of Music.

For its part, the Alligator was there to RECORD IT ALL. As the New York Times says, “ALL THE NEWS THAT’S FIT TO PRINT.” From its home in North Florida, the “all” was much, and it was near and far. Day-Trip near by car, and looking far into both the distant future and the distant past. From the pre-historic depths of Florida’s heralded, fresh water springs, to the Earth’s Orbit and beyond, to the Dark Side Of The Moon, for the Alligator, “ALL” was LOCAL NEWS.

Today, visitors to The Alligator are greeted by two of the paper’s most distinguished alumni. In its hundred years, The Alligator has been a first home to many accomplished journalists. To welcome visitors, it made accurate-reporting sense to choose writer Carl Hiaasen* and photograper Tom Kennedy* to represent ALL IN THE INDEPENDENT FLORIDA ALLIGATOR FAMILY.

alligator

It started with Ed*
JANUARY 15, 1971 — Ed Barber was, and will always be, the Soul of the Independent Florida Alligator. It was early 1971, and as operations manager, it was Ed’s decision to refuse “abortion” ads that had been submitted to the Alligator, as they had to college newspapers around the country.

At the time, the Alligator was published by the university and its right-wing Christian president, Stephen C. O’Connell. Ed followed the righteous “rules,” but also started to work with Hugh Cunningham, Ron Sachs, and Jean Chance in the rebellious effort to sever the Alligator’s relationship with UF.

After dealing with all the abortion shit that had hit the fan, Ed, encouraged by Hugh Cunningham was more than instrumental in securing the Alligator’s independence, and its move across University Avenue to the office behind the College Inn, a few small rooms at the end of the Inn’s hall of walk-in refrigerators. Fifty five years after Neil Armstrong stepped onto the Moon, four NASA astronauts and their Orion/Artemis 2 rocket were launched from the 39B, and onto orbit the Moon, having travelled farther from Earth than any manned mission before.
