PARTY AT THE BANDSHELL — No matter the year, whenever the Allman Brothers were in town, the beer was sure to flow freely. The State of Florida dictating the “legal” drinking age was no more controversial than in 1980. Most students on the UF campus, were somewhere in the 18-21-year-old window.

Missing The Show

(ABOVE) Not all the good time was had on the Bandshell stage and lawn. Some music lovers made their own fun, without hearing a note.

(TOP) On a sunny Saturday afternoon, Allman Brothers guitarist, Dickey Betts played to a large (Southern) UF crowd at the Bandshell. That day on the lawn, as always, the liquor flowed freely.

Alcohol consumption was a part of any show on the University of Florida campus, and such a reality always rubbed UF’s Christian conservative administrations the WRONG WAY.

In 1973, the legal drinking age in Florida had been lowered to 18, to the loud objection of the state’s leaders, especially UF President Stephen C. O’Connell.

In 1979, with a higher frequency of alcohol-feuled incidents on college campuses, the effort to raise the age intensified. The next year (1980), the Florida legislature managed to raise the age to 19, but that did little to please the conservatives, who wouldn’t be satisfied until the age was returned to 21.

The “liberal” argument to lower the age was loudest in the years of the Vietnam War. It was argued that if an 18-year-old could be drafted to kill and die in a Southeast Asian jungle, then that 18-year-old should be allowed a beer at Lillian’s Music Store.
