DECEMBER 8, 1980 — The night John Lennon was shot and killed outside his home, The Dakota, in New York City. His assassination stunned the World, and inspired Alligator editor David Dahl to say what he thought of the lack of legislative gun control in Florida, and in the rest of the United States.

Imagine, after all that had already happened in 1980, the year would end with the murder of John Lennon, the most socially active Beatle. A sad day, and again the result of a handgun. Again it was Alligator editor David Dahl who had something to say.

1970 — “Abraham, Martin, and John” was written by Dick Holler as a tribute to four assassinated Americans, all icons of social change: Abraham Lincoln, John F. Kennedy, Martin Luther King Jr., and Robert F. Kennedy. It was written in response to the assassination of King, and that of Robert Kennedy in April and June of 1968.

“Happiness Is a Warm Gun” — A Beatles song, written by John Lennon and Paul McCartney, released in 1968 on The White Album. Lennon said he got the idea for the song when reading an article in American Rifleman magazine and explained that the lyrics were a double entendre for guns and his sexual desire for Yoko Ono.

April 1, 1984 — Fourteen years after recording “Abraham, Martin, and John,” Marvin Gaye was shot and killed by his father, Marvin Gay Sr., at their house in the Western Heights neighborhood of Los Angeles. Gaye was shot twice, after he intervened in an argument between his parents.
