Feb. 1, 1973 — Considering Gainesville and North Florida’s reputation for growing high-grade marijuana, it seemed appropriate that The Alligator’s lead story on its first “Independent” front page was about a local effort to bring the decriminalization of marijuana to a state-wide vote.
