50 YEARS AFTER (2022)
The Tallahasse Democrat talked to two lead characters in The Independent Florida Alligator’s fight for both First Amendment and Abortion rights. Ron Sachs and Jean Chance explained, from their perspective, the circumstances of the day (1971) and pondered the implications of the right-wing Christian Nationalists making it a crime again for a woman to exercise her right to choose an abortion rather than birth.

MARCH 19, 1982 — Another memorable day in the Alligator life of Ed Barber, ten years into his being The Independent Florida Alligator’s General Manager. This time, he was having a discussion with Robert McClure, the editor. They were discussing, whether or not to publish Alan Ferguson’s picture of a group of homophobic fraternity brothers exposing themselves as the Greek assholes they were. Ed, representing the business side of the Alligator, reasonably argued that a consequence of publishing the picture would be a certain loss of significant grocery store advertising.
In his always respectful way, Ed spoke his piece, but always leaning toward the editorial, “allowed” Robert to publish the photograph.
Of course Ed was right. Winn Dixie did pull a month’s worth of advertising, and all sides of critical shit hit the fan. [LETTERS HERE]
